Thanksgiving Snacking
Thanksgiving is around the corner. Turkey, cranberry sauce, and gravy quickly come to mind.
But wait. What about snacks??? Where do snacks come into play during this popular holiday???
I am, for the first time, drawing a blank.
Out of curiosity, as I am out and about, I inquired…
Pumpkin pie is the only thing that people mentioned, with a hint of laughter, as they quickly added that it is really not a snack.
Well, it is not technically a snack, but what about those ‘mini’ pies that are all the rage? They are indeed considered a snack, right?
Just as I thought…maybe there really are NO Thanksgiving related snacks. One of my colleagues surprised me when I brought up the subject and casually mentioned with disappointment that there is no snack associated with this wonderful holiday. He looked at me with bewilderment and immediately shouted out “walnut balls!” He can’t believe that I don’t know about walnut balls and that I never had them.
According to him, this is a tradition in his Italian family. His mother ALWAYS made them during Thanksgiving and Christmas. These are a must have in his family and he exclaimed this is the most delicious cookie he has ever had.
Furthermore, he excitedly informed me that these are the easiest and most fun snacks to make in the whole world, and that he loves to make them with his children and grandchildren whenever he can.
After hearing him talk incessantly about walnut balls in such juicy details, I asked him if there is a family recipe. He immediately said no, annoyed that I am so out of touch with this popular and common snack, so he informed me that the recipe can easily be located online.
This really piqued my curiosity and interest. What are these amazing ‘walnut balls’? How come I am so out of touch with this seemingly ‘common and popular’ snack?
Based on my online search, walnut balls are buttered walnut cookies rolled in powdered sugar while still warm. However, the origin of these cookies is unknown. For once, something I am curious about is not found on Wikipedia. What’s up with this???
True to his words, I did find NUMEROUS recipes. Now I really can’t wait to try them out. The question is which recipe will turn out the most authentic, most delicious, and, hopefully, the most healthy batch.
I will share with you all the outcome of my experiment(s?) as soon as I am able.
In the meantime, I would love to hear about your experiences and thoughts on ‘walnut balls’ (especially any tips on making them) from all of you out there!
For that matter, I am equally eager to hear about any other snacks out there that are associated with Thanksgiving.
Giving you all my sincerest thanks in advance!
Have A Happy One!
